Alsup, Hughett qualify for U.S. Senior Amateur

Mike Alsup and Mike Hughett shot 70 and 71, respectively, at Oaks Country Club in Tulsa Thursday to lead a strong field and qualify for the USGA Senior Amateur Championship.

Alsup, who played collegiately at the University of Tulsa, and Hughett, who played at both Oral Roberts and Nebraska, edged Jonathan Valuck of Oklahoma City (72) and Bradley Kropp of Edmond (73), who are first and second alternates.

Kirk Wright of Oklahoma City also shot 73, while Bob Sine of OKC and Bob Brooks of Bella Vista, Ark., came in with 74.

The U.S. Senior Amateur is Sept. 17-22 at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis. The field of 156 will play two days of stroke play after which the field will be cut to 64 for match play.

Hughett has won a record 19 Oklahoma Golf Association championships but would love to add a USGA title to his collection.
