Boyd survives wild finish to win Section PNC

OKLAHOMA CITY – You’ve got to hand it to Michael Boyd. The man practices what he preaches.

Boyd, the director of golf at The Club at Indian Springs in Broken Arrow, helps his students by teaching them to keep a positive mental attitude and be resilient even when their swing deserts them. His teachings recently helped student Colton Staggs win the 2014 Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at Shangri-La, while another student, Preston Crawford, made it to the finals of the OGA State Amateur Championship.

Now Boyd has a trophy to rest beside Staggs’ hardware on the mantel at Indian Springs. Despite an adventurous back nine in which he hit in three hazards, lost a ball in a pond and took a double bogey on the final hole, Boyd held on to win the South Central PGA Professional Championship Tuesday at Gaillardia Country Club.

Boyd shot 77 in difficult conditions Tuesday after blistering the course with rounds of 69-66 Monday to edge Mark Fuller of The Golf Club at Surrey Hills by two shots. The top five qualify for the 2015 Professional National Championship June 21-24 at The Philadelphia Cricket Club. The top twenty finishers there will go on to the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straights in Kohler, Wis.

Boyd finished at 4-under 212, while Fuller was at 2-under after a final round 76. Also qualifying were Brent Wilcoxen of South Lakes Golf Course in Jenks at even-par, Jim Woodward of Oak Tree National in Edmond at 2 over and Shannon Friday of Lincoln Park in Oklahoma City at 3 over. Alternates are Patrick Bates, Kyley Tetley and Tracy Phillips.

Boyd had a three-shot advantage on Fuller to begin the final round but it had dwindled to two shots after a bogey on the 10th hole. Boyd built the lead back to three shots with birdies on the par-4 12th hole and the par-5 14th. It was a wild ride to the finish for both players from there.

The lead dropped to one when Boyd hit his tee shot in the water on the par-3 15th, leading to a double bogey. Boyd and Fuller both reached the green in regulation on the long par-4 16th, but both were more than 90 feet away from the pin. Fuller three-putted, while Boyd saved par with about a 14-footer.

Fuller got in trouble in deep rough right on the par-4 17th green, leading to a double bogey and it seemed Boyd was on cruise control with a four-shot lead going into the final hole, a 540-yard par-5. But Boyd had to take an unplayable lie after his tee shot drifted left into a stand of trees, then he was forced to punch left into the 17th fairway. He wound up with about four feet for double bogey, a putt that would have been much harder if Fuller’s birdie attempt from about 10 feet had not barely missed left.

"It’s been a long time since I had the lead in an individual event and I really had an adventure there on the back nine," Boyd said. "You don’t usually shoot 40 on the back nine and win anything, but I think I shot 40 on the back nine of the final round at Q School the year I earned my PGA Tour card, so I guess it’s a lucky number for me."

Boyd, a former University of Tulsa All-American, played the PGA Tour in 2007 and the Web.com Tour in 2008. He had his entire arsenal in high gear Monday when he shot 9 under for 36 holes to leave most of his fellow club professionals far behind.

"I was free wheeling and my swing was great," Boyd said. "I hit 32 greens in regulation and really felt I could have shot even lower.

"Today, my struggles really started on 7, when I hit it in the water there but still managed to get up-and-down for bogey. Then I missed the green on 8 from 95 yards. It was a struggle from there, but the two birdies on the back nine were big."

The PGA Professional National Championship, carrying a $550,000 total purse this year, is broadcast (all four rounds) by GOLF CHANNEL. Following 36 holes of play, the field will be trimmed to the low 90 scorers and ties, and following 54 holes of play, the field will be trimmed to the low 70 scorers and ties.
