SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Oral Roberts senior Cody Burrows was named the 2018-19 Summit League Men’s Golfer of the Year on Thursday with the release of the 2018-19 Summit League Men’s Golf award winners.
Burrows was tabbed the League’s Golfer of the Year for the second time in his career, duplicating the honor he won as a sophomore following the 2016-17 season. Burrows collected the honor this time after breaking the ORU single-season stroke average record with a 71.5 clip and leading the league with seven top-five finishes. He also earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Austin Regional and the four-time, All-Summit League First Team performer finished in a four-way tie for first at the 2019 Summit League Championship after carding a 219 (+3).
Denver freshman Cal McCoy was named the Newcomer of the Year after ranking among the top five in the league in stroke average and turning in a quartet of top-10 finishes. He joined Burrows in the four-way tie for the top individual spot at the 2019 Summit League Championship and won the four-man playoff on the first hole to claim Championship MVP honors.
McCoy and classmate Esteban Missura both carded 145 totals in the final 36 holes of The Championship to give head coach Erik Billinger his first Summit League title since taking over the program prior to the 2014-15 season.
Those efforts helped Billinger earn Coach of the Year accolades for the first time in his head coaching career. The Pioneers entered the final day two strokes off the pace but closed out the event with a Championship-best 288 total to win the event by 15 strokes to earn their way back to an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2014.
All three awards were determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
