AXTELL, Neb. (May 2) -Daniela Martinez fired a 1-under-par 71 to earn a share of the individual lead and give Central Oklahoma a tie atop the team standings after first-round play in the NCAA Division II  Central Regional here Monday.

Martinez used a strong start to pave the way to the under-par round that left her tied for the medalist lead with Celine Lim of Missouri Western, while the Bronchos and Griffons shared the top spot with 297 totals.

Northeastern State is third in the 12-team field at 298, followed by Concordia-St. Paul (300) and Augustana (301).  Second-round play begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday and the 54-hole tourney concludes Wednesday.

The top three teams and first three individuals not on those teams qualify for the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships, set for May 17-21 in Denver, Colo.

“Dani really carried us today,” head coach Michael Bond.  “She got off to a great start and played a smart round of golf.  It was a good first day, but there’s a lot of teams bunched together and we have to keep playing well.”
