AXTELL, Neb. (May 2) -Daniela Martinez fired a 1-under-par 71 to earn a share of the individual lead and give Central Oklahoma a tie atop the team standings after first-round play in the NCAA Division II Central Regional here Monday.
Martinez used a strong start to pave the way to the under-par round that left her tied for the medalist lead with Celine Lim of Missouri Western, while the Bronchos and Griffons shared the top spot with 297 totals.
Northeastern State is third in the 12-team field at 298, followed by Concordia-St. Paul (300) and Augustana (301). Second-round play begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday and the 54-hole tourney concludes Wednesday.
The top three teams and first three individuals not on those teams qualify for the NCAA Division II Womenâ€™s Golf Championships, set for May 17-21 in Denver, Colo.
â€œDani really carried us today,â€ head coach Michael Bond. â€œShe got off to a great start and played a smart round of golf. It was a good first day, but thereâ€™s a lot of teams bunched together and we have to keep playing well.â€
Marla Souvannasing and Camilla Schou both shot 75 for UCO, while Makena Mucciaccio added a 76 and Grace Shin an 81.
Martinez opened her round with three straight pars before making back-to-back birdies and then followed a bogey on the eighth hole with an eagle on the par-5 ninth to make the turn at three-under 33.
The senior standout made consecutive bogeys to start the back nine and then was up-and-down the rest of the way with two birdies, two bogeys and three pars in coming in with a 38 for the 71.
Souvannasing made eight consecutive pars to start the day before bogeying No. 9 to shot a front-nine 37. She came back with seven pars and two bogeys on the back for a closing 38.
Schou shot an even-par 36 on the opening nine in unconventional fashion with three birdies, four pars, a double bogey and a bogey. She made three back-nine bogeys along with six pars for the 39 that gave her a 75.
Mucciaccio made the turn at 39 before making a pair of back-nine birdies in closing with a 37.
The No. 10-ranked Northeastern State womenâ€™s golf team sits in third place after Mondayâ€™s first round. NSU is attempting to qualify for the national finals for the first time since 2013.
The RiverHawks fired an opening-round score of 10-over-par 298 to land one stroke behind co-leaders Missouri Western State and No. 24 Central Oklahoma.
Junior Baylee Price is gunning for the fourth individual championship in her last five tournaments, and she opened with an even-par round of 72 to position herself in a tie for fourth one back of a trio of leaders.
True freshman Kelsey Lumpkin shot 2-under on the back 9 to shoot 1-over 73 and land in a tie for sixth. Senior Kayla Schroeder sits T-22 at 4-over 76 and true freshman Ebba Moberg is T-26 at 5-over 77. Senior Charter Lawson shot 8-over 80 to position herself in a tie for 41st.
NSU will begin teeing off in the final groups of the second round at 9:50 a.m. May 3.
