Could Wood, Eckroat be on collision course in State Amateur? Other stars may beg to differ

It wasn’t always easy, but Oklahoma State teammates Austin Eckroat and Hayden Wood advanced through their first two matches Tuesday in the Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship at The Patriot in Owasso.

Eckroat came out hot in his morning match against Mike Biata of Owasso and Oral Roberts with birdies on five of the first six holes in a 4 and 3 victory, but struggled through much of his second round match before winning in 19 holes against J.R. Hurley of Norman.

Wood, on the other hand, was in control throughout his 6 and 4 victory over Aaron Lee in the morning and 6 and 5 win over Conrad Walcher of Oklahoma City in the afternoon. Wood closed out his first match by driving within 6 feet of the cup on the tricky par-4 fifth hole (he played the back nine first).

The two Edmond stars are on opposite sides of the bracket and could conceivably meet in the finals. Eckroat will face Max Roberts of Fitzhugh Wednesday morning in the round of 16 while Wood faces Jack Howes of McKinney, Texas, a golfer at Oral Roberts University.

No. 1 seed and 2017 runner-up Cody Burrows of Chickasha and ORU rolled to a 6 and 4 win over Carson Daniel of Tulsa and a 6 and 5 blitz over Dylan Igo of Mustang. Burrows will face Rhett Bechel of Edmond in the third round.

Lane Wallace of the University of Oklahoma also moved on with a 5 and 3 win over Matthew Rison of Edmond and a 3 and 2 second-round victory over Daniel Dalton of Newcastle.

Wallace will face Mike Hughett of Owasso. Hughett, a few weeks from his 60th birthday, won his two matches, edging John Ryan Bonaobra 1 up in the morning and Earl Jacks of Claremore 3 and 2 in the afternoon. Hughett last week won his 21st OGA event with his victory in the Senior Stroke Play Championship.

His fellow senior stalwart Lawrence Field was unable to join him in the round of 16. Field won his first-round match over Sam Bass of Norman 4 and 3, but fell to Brady Richardson of Tulsa 3 and 2 in the afternoon.
