Cowboys finish third in Fighting Illini Invitational

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team used a closing 283 during the third round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational on Sunday to rise one spot into third place at Olympia Fields Country Club.

With their 3-over round, the top-ranked Cowboys finished with a 10-over-par total of 850. Texas A&M surged into the top spot with a 271 on its way to a nine-shot victory. The Aggies posted an 837 total, while Alabama was second at 846 at the par-70, 7,300-yard layout.

Alabama did produce the event’s individual medalist in Davis Riley, who carded his second consecutive 67 to finish at 10-under 200 and three shots clear of the field.

OSU’s Zach Bauchou closed with a 69 to move into a tie for fourth place at 206. The junior got going quickly with birdies at Nos. 1 and 3 before moving back to level par for the day with bogeys at the fifth and eighth. He followed with a birdie at the ninth to make the turn under par.

After carding a bogey at the 10th, Bauchou carded back-to-back birdies at Nos. 11 and 12. He then sandwiched his sixth birdie of the day at the 17th with bogeys at the 16th and 18th on the way to his  1-under score.

Freshman Matthew Wolff closed with a 72, giving him a 1-over score of 211 and tying his for 13th place.

Senior Brendon Jelley’s second consecutive 72 tied him for 30th place at 218, while classmate Kristoffer Ventura was a stroke back at 219 and tied for 39th place after posting a 73 during his third round.

Junior Hayden Wood signed for his low round of the event, an even-par 70, to tie for 45th place at 220.

The Cowboys will be back in action on Oct. 9 when they look to defend their title at the Paintbrush Invitational at Colorado Golf Club.
