Cowboys, Sooners to play at Stillwater Regional at Karsten Creek

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team will be the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Stillwater Regional, which will be contested at Karsten Creek Golf Club, it was announced this morning on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive.

The Cowboys will welcome 13 teams and five individuals to their par-72, 7,418-yard layout. The tournament will take place May 16-18 with 18 holes being contested each day.

The Tom Fazio design has twice hosted the NCAA Championship, holding the event in 2003 and 2011. Additionally, the course served as the home to the Karsten Creek Collegiate in 1996, the NCAA Central Regional in 2001, the Ping/Golfweek Preview in 2002 and 2010 and the NCAA South Central Regional in 2009.

OSU has won 10 regional titles dating back to 1989. That year, the three-regional system was implemented and used until 2008. During that time, the Cowboys competed in the Central Regional every year. The 2009 campaign marked the first time a six-regional format was used.

Ten times a Cowboy has claimed medalist honors with senior Jordan Niebrugge being the most recent, finishing first last year at the New Haven Regional.

Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams.  The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.

The Oklahoma Sooners were announced as the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Stillwater Regional.

The Sooners, ranked No. 20 nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin, will make their sixth straight regional appearance under seventh-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl and 44th postseason appearance in school history.

“We are excited to be headed to Stillwater and to stay close to home,” Hybl said. “This is championship season and this is why our guys come to Oklahoma – to compete for championships. Regionals is a fun week to see what your guys are made of, and this is what we have been working for all year.”

NCAA Regionals will also take place in Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Marana, Ariz.; Kohler, Wisc.; Albuquerque, N. M.; and Franklin, Tenn. A total of 81 teams and 45 individuals were chosen for regionals.

Other Big 12 squads who qualified for a regional are Texas (No. 1 seed, Franklin), Baylor (No. 5, Kohler), Kansas (No. 7, Tuscaloosa), Texas Tech (No. 8 seed, Albuquerque) and TCU (No. 9 seed, Albuquerque).

Last year, the Sooners advanced to their fifth straight NCAA Championships with a 20-stroke victory at the NCAA San Diego Regional. At the national tournament in Bradenton, Fla., OU tied for 28th place.
