COLUMBUS, Ohio – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team opened play at the NCAA Columbus Regional on Monday with a 3-under-par team score of 281 to stand alone atop the leaderboard at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.

The top-ranked Cowboys were one of just two teams to break par during the first day of action at the par-71, 7,364-yard layout. UNLV posted a 282 during its opening round, while Illinois finished the day at even-par 284. Rounding out the top five were Northwestern at 292 and Penn State at 293.

Michael Feagles of Illinois carded a 3-under 68 to lead the individual race by one shot over UNLV’s Garrick Higgo.

Three Cowboys finished under par on Monday with Austin Eckroat, Kristoffer Ventura and Matthew Wolff all posting 1-under 70s to stand in a tie for third place.

Eckroat, a freshman for OSU, carded eight pars against one bogey to make the turn at 1-over 37 before tallying birdies on three of the first four holes on his inward nine to move into red figures.

Ventura opened with birdies at Nos. 1 and 4 before posting his lone bogey at the eighth. The senior closed out his round with 10 consecutive pars.

Wolff turned in 1-under 35 with a front nine that included an eagle and a birdie. The freshman’s inward nine consisted of three pars, three birdies and three bogeys.

Junior Zach Bauchou turned in an even-par total of 71 to finish the day in a tie for eighth place.

Sophomore Viktor Hovland carded a 2-over 73 to come in tied for 18th place.

The regional is one of six being conducted to determine the field for the NCAA Championship finals, which will be contested May 25-30 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater.

Three sites have 13 teams and 10 individuals not on those teams, while the other three regionals are comprised of 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance.
