Cowgirls in fifth at NCAA Championship

EUGENE, Oregon – The Eugene Country Club course fought back a little on Saturday, but it couldn’t knock the Oklahoma State women’s golf team out of contention at the NCAA Championship.

After entering the day atop the leaderboard at 4-under, the No. 8 ranked Cowgirls went 7-over 295 on the day, and found themselves tied for fifth place at 3-over 579 after 36 holes.

No. 2 Southern California shot the day’s low round at 8-under 280 to overtake the lead, which sits at 7-under 569. On the individual leaderboard, Miami’s Dewi Weber posted a 6-under 66 for the day to lift her into the top spot at 9-under 135.

After Sunday’s third round, the field will be whittled down to the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team for one additional day of stroke play to determine the 72-hole stroke play individual champion, as well as the top eight teams for match-play competition. The top eight teams then compete in match play for the championship.

Cowgirl Maddie McCrary posted a six-birdie round on Saturday, and finished 1-under 71 to jump into a tie for 19th place. The sophomore became the third Cowgirl to post six birdies in a round at this year’s NCAA Championship (Chih-Min Chin and Linnea Johansson).

Junior Linnea Johansson was also 1-under on the day, and is in 26th place with at even par for the event.

Two-time defending Big 12 individual champion Kenzie Neisen was 3-over for the day, and is now 2-over for the championship. The sophomore will enter Sunday’s third round in 38th place.

Chih-Min Chen was 6-over and Emma Broze was 7-over on Saturday. Chen, a freshman, is in 54th place at 3-over, while Broze, a sophomore, is tied for 94th at 7-over 151.
