Quade Cummins of Weatherford shot a bogey-free final round of 9-under 62 Tuesday and then won a one-hole playoff with a birdie to capture the Sun Bowl Marathon All-America Golf Classic at El Paso Country Club.

Cummins, who began the day tied for eighth, finished in a tie for first at 13-under with Spencer Ralston of Gainesville, Ga., who closed with a 3-under 68. Cummins, a redshirt junior at the University of Oklahoma, opened with a 1-over 72, then shot 66-62. He began his final round with four consecutive pars then birdied eight of the next nine holes.

This marks the first time since 2011 that there has been a playoff in the All-America Golf Classic, while it also marks the 14th tournament that the winner has been crowned after a playoff.

“I got it going on the back nine and saw the scoreboard around hole No. 14, and that is when I knew I had a chance if I could keep it going,” Cummins said. “I had two par saves on 13 and 14. I hit it in some really bad spots and got them up-and-down to keep my round going and it added up to a 62.”

Cummins shot 17 birdies and an eagle over three rounds of play. He tied the record for the best individual round with his final round of 62. Cummins tied with Luke List (2006), Billy Horschel (2006), Webb Simpson (2007) and Gavin Green (2014). He broke the record for best final round, which was previously held by Jeremy Anderson (1998) and Sebastian Cappelen (2012).

Ralston’s 13-under tournament total eclipsed his previous best of 12-under set at the 2018 Linger Longer Invitational. He made a tournament-high 19 birdies during the tournament, including nine during his 7-under, which matched his personal best from two previous events.

Among other players with Oklahoma ties, Austin Eckroat of Edmond and Oklahoma State shot a final-round 66 to finish eighth at 7-under. Cummins’ OU teammate Blaine Hale tied for 12th at 5-under. Mason Overstreet of Kingfisher finished 17th at 3-under. Brad Dalke of OU and Norman and Hayden Wood of OSU and Edmond both struggled, finishing at 15 and 21 over respectively.

Cummins has finished tied for third twice as a Sooner and won the Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship in 2016. In perhaps a harbinger of things to come, Cummins won the Ping Putting Contest on Sunday held among all competitors in the field. Overstreet finished second in the Titleist Long Drive competition to Mattias Schmid of Louisville. Schmid hit it 331 yards into the wind while Overstreet bashed it 322.
