Cummins notches 69 to lead Sooners in first round of The Prestige

The No. 11 Oklahoma men’s golf team holds fourth place at the end of the first round of The Prestige at PGA WEST. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is taking place at the par-71, 7,076-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta, Calif.

The Sooners shot a 286 (+2) on Monday against a 13-team field that features five squads in the top 25 of Golfstat rankings.

“Quade (Cummins) had a very nice round today, and we need to do a better job as a group tomorrow,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “It wasn’t our best today, but these guys are feeling good.”

No. 8 Stanford and Pepperdine sit atop the team leaderboard at 281 (-3), and No. 14 San Diego State is in third, one stroke back. Iowa State and Arizona State are tied for fifth, two strokes behind the Sooners.

Redshirt freshman Quade Cummins paces OU after firing a 69 (-2) in the first round to hold a share of fifth place individually among 78 competitors. The Weatherford, Okla., product pocketed four birdies on the day and shot a bogey-free front nine en route to his second career round in the 60s.

Senior Max McGreevy and junior Grant Hirschman each totaled a 72 (+1) on the first 18 holes and hold a piece of 24th place. The upperclassman duo produced two birdies each, and McGreevy added an eagle on hole No. 2.

Sophomore Blaine Hale recorded a 73 (+2) on Monday and shares 32nd place, collecting two birdies in the round. Classmate Brad Dalke is tied for 52nd after tallying a 75 (+4). Despite carding four birdies on the front nine, Dalke could not overcome an early deficit.
