AUSTIN, Texas (March 29, 2016) – Against a field that included most of the top teams in NCAA Division II’s South Central Region, the Oklahoma Christian Eagles proved themselves as solid contenders during the St. Edward’s Invitational, which ended Tuesday at Onion Creek Club.

OC posted a final-round score of 281 for a three-round total of 858, placing third behind No. 10-ranked Central Missouri and regional power Colorado-Colorado Springs, which tied at 851. Central Missouri won a tiebreaker to take the title.

The Eagles were the highest-placed among seven Heartland Conference squads in the 15-team event, six shots ahead of fourth-place Dallas Baptist (Texas), and were second among South Central teams.

OC senior Sam Johnston tied for fourth individually, closing with an even-par 70 on the 6,519-yard course and finishing the tournament at 1-under 209. Johnston (who ended up nine shots behind the individual winner, Calum Hill of Western New Mexico) finished higher than every other Heartland golfer in the 80-man field.

Freshman Alejandro Valenzuela turned in the Eagles’ best round on Tuesday, a sizzling 4-under 66 that included four birdies on the back nine and vaulted him into a tie for 15th place at 217. His teammate, freshman Juan Pallach, also tied for 15th after an impressive final-round 68, recording an eagle on the par-5 No. 5 at Onion Creek.

A third OC freshman, Manuel Hernandez, shot a 77 to finish at 222, tied for 37th. OC sophomore Zac Schaefer, coming off his first collegiate win a week earlier, tied for 53rd at 225 after closing with a 78.

The Eagles will play their third tournament in as many weeks starting next Monday, when they will compete in the Dallas Baptist Patriot Classic at Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving, Texas.
