Oklahoma State golfer Austin Eckroat made a birdie in a three-man playoff to grab one of the final qualifying spots to play in the 2019 U.S. Open in sectional qualifying Monday in Dallas.
There were 102 contestants for 10 spots who played 18 holes at Northwood CC and 18 holes at Bent Tree CC. Eckroat shot rounds of 65 at Northwood and 72 at Bent Tree to finish in a three-way tie with Cody Gribble and Charles Danielson at 4-under. Eckroat and Danielson advanced while Gribble is the first alternate.
Eckroat now has a spot in the 119th U.S. Open Championship June 13-16 at Pebble Beach.
Brendon Todd and Nick Taylor led the way at 10-under. Golfers with Oklahoma ties who did not earn a spot included former University of Tulsa golfer Martin Maritz. former Oklahoma City University golfer Tyrone van Aswegen and current University of Oklahoma golfer Garett Reband, all at 1 over. Former OU golfer Rylee Reinertson, current OU golfer Blaine Hale, former OSU golfer Stratton Nolen, McCain Shellhardt of Edmond and UMKC and Rhein Gibson of Edmond also did not advance.
