Austin Eckroat, one of the five starters on Oklahoma State’s 2018 national championship squad, fired a 62 in qualifying for the Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship at Lincoln Park Monday.

Eckroat, of Edmond, made it clear that he’ll be a favorite to replace OSU teammate Brendon Jelley, who won three of the past four OGA State Amateur crowns and is now a professional.

Jack Howes of McKinney, Texas, who plays collegiately at Oral Roberts, was second with a 65, followed by Tyler Trout of Oklahoma City at 66. Brian Birchell of Oklahoma City, Lane Wallace of Yukon and McCain Schelhardt of Edmond each shot 68.

There were 36 spots set at Lincoln Park, and 27 will qualify Friday at Bailey Ranch Golf Course in Owasso. Last year’s runnerup Cody Burrows is exempt and is the No. 1 seed. The OGA State Amateur is July 17-19 at The Patriot in Owasso.
