NORMAN, Okla. (May 16) – Central Oklahoma’s Eric Kline and Russ Purser have been selected to the NCAA Division II All-Central Region Team that was released Monday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
It’s the second straight year for both senior standouts to earn All-Central Region honors as the duo led the Bronchos to their fifth straight national tournament appearance this season, with that event set to start Tuesday.
Kline leads UCO with a 74.4 scoring standard and has had five top-10 tournament finishes. The Ponca City native has had six rounds in the 60s this year and captured one tournament title.
Purser carries a 75.17 average into the national tourney and has had six top-20 showings in 2015-16. The Edmond product owns one tournament victory and two other top-10 finishes.
SWOSU has placed multiple individuals on the PING All-Central Region team, which honors the top 12 golfers in the region. Stefan Idstam earned the honor for the third straight season, while Jake Duvall picks up the award for the second straight year. A total of 112 players across eight regions East, Atlantic, Southeast, South, Midwest, South Central, Central and West earned all-region honors, which are announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
“I am extremely proud of both Jake and Stefan for being named to the All-Region Team,†SWOSU Head Coach Brad Fleetwood said. “This award is reflective of the incredible seasons that they both had, dating back to last September.â€
Idstam (Marifred, Sweden) is SWOSU’s only three-time all-region selection in the NCAA Division II era and he’s now earned the award during each season he’s played for the Bulldogs. He finished in the top ten at six different tournaments, including a first-place finish at the Rattler Invitational in February that earned him GAC Player of the Week honors. Additionally, Idstam was named a First Team All-GAC selection in 2016, his third straight all-conference honor.
“For Stefan to earn this award in each of his three years in the program is nothing less than phenomenal,†Fleetwood said. “Stefan has proven to be one of the best players in this region since he stepped foot on campus and I am looking forward to seeing what his senior season holds for him.â€
Duvall (Victoria, British Columbia) is now a two-time all-region selection after earlier this spring becoming SWOSU’s first four-time all-conference golfer of the NCAA era. He recorded five top-ten finishes in ten tournaments this season, highlighted by a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Central/Midwest Super Regional.
“I am really happy that Jake gets to end his career at SWOSU with this award,†Fleetwood added. “Jake has set a precedent for SWOSU Golf during his time with the program and he has been an integral part of the many milestones that our team has reached over the past four seasons.â€
SWOSU has now had a total of seven PING All-Central Region selections over the past four seasons, with Duvall and Idstam both earning multiple accolades from the GCAA.
