Future Sooner Hirschman wins Southeastern Amateur

University of Oklahoma men’s golf incoming freshman Grant Hirschman claimed the 85th Southeastern Amateur, one of the nation’s top amateur events, on Saturday. The 72-hole tournament was played June 11-14 at the par-71 Country Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ga.

After finishing the event with scores of 274 (-10), Hirschman and Shad Tuten, who plays at Armstrong, competed in a playoff, which Hirschman won. Hirschman, from St. George’s High School in Collierville, Tenn., tallied scores of 69, 66, 69 and 70 and totaled 20 birdies at the tournament.

The Southeastern Amateur is a top-level amateur golf tournament with a rich history dating back to 1922, when the tournament was started by Fred Haskins. Each year, the Southeastern Amateur hosts many of the nations top amateur golfers, including Division I NCAA National Champions and the nation’s top Mid-Amateurs.

"It is so good to see our guys playing well over the summer because this is an important time for them," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "For an incoming freshman to get a big win like Grant just did is very impressive, and I am excited for him. He has been playing really well the last month, and his confidence is sky high right now."

The Southeastern Amateur typically takes place the same week as U.S. Open. Historically, this has been the second week of the "summer swing," where the collegiate players travel around the country honing their skills for their next year of NCAA competition.
