Golden Eagles lead ORU Shootout, OC hangs tough

TULSA, Okla. – With two golfers inside the top 15 individually, the Oral Roberts women’s golf team shot 600 (298-302) Monday and holds a three shot lead with 18 holes to play at the ORU Shootout, presented by Mark Allen Auto Group.

Kennedy Ishee and Rebecca Hnidka each notched a birdie on 18 to help ORU extend its lead. Ishee’s birdie took her into the red numbers as the senior finished her second round at -1 and vaulted to a tie for third in the individual standings.

ORU held a slim one shot lead after the first round, but extended it to three in the afternoon.

ORU will be paired with Lamar and UTEP for the third and final round, beginning at 8 a.m. Live results for the final round can be found at: https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/39368/

With two players in the top 15, Oklahoma Christian held its own against NCAA Division I women’s golf competition.

Sophomore Abigail Rigsby and freshman Shaley Goad led the way for the Lady Eagles, who were eighth in the 17-team field at 614 after posting team scores of 307 in both of Monday’s rounds. OC is one of only two non-Division I teams in the tournament.

OC will enter Tuesday’s final round trailing the leader, ORU, by 14 shots. Among the teams OC has a lead on after two rounds are Northern Iowa, Louisiana-Monroe, Houston Baptist, Texas-Arlington, Incarnate Word, Stephen F. Austin, Missouri State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Rigsby opened with a 1-over-par 73 on the 6,085-yard MeadowBrook layout, then followed that with a 75 to finish the day tied for 10th at 4-over 148, eight shots behind the leader, Verena Gimmy of Missouri State. Goad was tied for 15th in the 90-woman field, shooting 73-78—151.

OC junior Elizabeth Freeman shot a pair of 78s and was tied for 42nd at 156. Fellow junior Kate Goodwin, playing in her hometown, shot 84-76—160 and was tied for 69th, while freshman Felicity Wittenberg posted rounds of 83 and 79 and was tied for 75th at 162.

Playing as an individual, OC sophomore Ashton Nemecek was tied for 85th at 166 after rounds of 84 and 82.

The third round will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
