It was a near miss for many players with Oklahoma ties at U.S. Open Sectional qualifying Monday at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Texas. OU’s Blaine Hale lost in a playoff for the final of three spots and is first alternate after shooting rounds of 69-65. Dillon Rust of Edmond, who won the local qualifier at Cedar Ridge CC in Broken Arrow, shot 65-70 and is second alternate.

Former OSU Cowboys Stratton Nolen and Brendon Jelley each shot 137 while Cowboy All-American Matthew Wolff shot 138.  Logan McAlllister of Oklahoma City shot 152 and OSU’s Viktor Hovland withdrew after a first-round 76.

It was also a disappointing day for players with Oklahoma ties in the largest sectional at Brookside Golf & Country Club in Columbus, where 14 spots were available. Kevin Tway of Edmond did earn the second alternate spot with a 5-under total of 139. Also in that sectional were Talor Gooch of Midwest City (142), Kristoffer Ventura of Oklahoma State (144), Edmond North graduate Robert Streb (145), amateur Rob Laird of Cedar Ridge Country Club (147) and Zach Bauchou of Oklahoma State (149).

In other sectionals, former OU golfer Max McGreevy and former OSU golfer Ed Loar could not advance at Woodmont CC in Rockville, MD, former OSU golfer Wyndham Clark missed by a shot and Edmond’s Rhein Gibson by two shots in the New Jersey sectional, and OU’s Grant Hirschman and Brad Dalke did not advance in the Memphis sectional.

The Houston sectional is below. Complete results of all sectionals are available here.
