Mike Hughett of Owasso came back strong in the final round of the 2019 John T. Lupton Memorial Senior, finishing second by a point to William Mitchell in the three-round event which utilized the Stableford Scoring System.
The Lupton Memorial has divisions for seniors and mid-amateurs and is held at The Honors Course north of Chattanooga, Tenn. Hughett was effectively 10 shots behind the second-round leader Paul Simpson going into the final round and also well behind Rick Cloninger, the top-ranked senior amateur by Amateurgolf.com. On the final day under tougher conditions, Hughett managed a 2-under 70, good for 38 Stableford points. He actually missed a 6-foot par putt on the 18th hole that would have tied Mitchell for the lead and forced a playoff.
“I had no idea the leaders were struggling that much the final day as they were two or three groups behind me,” Hughett said. “Simpson shot 81 and finished tied for third and the eventual winner made an 8-foot putt for par on 18.”
Hughett, long one of Oklahoma’s top amateurs, said it was a first-class event featuring some of the fastest greens he has ever played on and he looks forward to returning to that event and trying to qualify for the 2021 U.S. Senior Amateur which will be held at The Honors Course in 2021.
