IRVING, Texas (April 5, 2016) – Senior Sam Johnston finished fourth, leading Oklahoma Christian to a fifth-place team finish in the Dallas Baptist Patriot Classic, which ended Tuesday at Hackberry Creek Country Club.
After opening the tournament with a pair of 69s, Johnston posted a 4-over-par 76 on Tuesday to close at 214 and finish six shots behind the individual champion, Jared Baker of Midwestern State (Texas).
In what was the Eagles’ final tuneup before the Heartland Conference Championship in two weeks, they finished fifth in a tight race. NAIA power Texas Wesleyan took the team title with a three-round score of 863, followed by Dallas Baptist (Texas) at 867, Cameron and Midwestern State at 870 and OC at 871. The latter four teams all were in the initial NCAA Division II South Central Region top 10, released last week.
OC was within a shot of the lead midway through its round but eventually posted a final-round team score of 297. The fifth-place finish was the Eagles’ lowest in five tournaments this spring.
Two Eagles tied for 19th in the 85-man field with a three-round score of 219 – freshman Alejandro Valenzuela, who closed with a 73 on the 7,064-yard course, and sophomore Zac Schaefer, who shot a 74.
OC freshman Manuel Hernandez finished 34th at 223, posting a final-round 78, while freshman Juan Pallach’s 74 left him at 230, tied for 47th.
Playing as an individual, OC freshman Ethan Smith had the best round of the day by any of the Eagles, a 4-under 68 that put him at 220 for the tournament, tied for 21st.
The Eagles will play in the Heartland tournament March 17-19 at Horseshoe Bay Resort in Horseshoe Bay, Texas.
Rogers State men’s golf team closed its final regular season tournament in 12th place after a third-round score of 313 Tuesday.
For the third-consecutive round, it was freshman Patrick Bart leading the way for the Hillcats as he carded a 4-over-par 76 in the finale. Behind an event-leading scoring average of 2.87 (-2) on par three’s, the Burnham, England native tallied three birdies in round three for a tie in 21st place at 220.
Alex Marsh kept his scoring trend through the final round firing four birdies during his 18 holes for the third time during the event. The sophomore posted a 77 Tuesday to finish tied for 35th overall with a score of 224, leading the team with 12 birdies during the 54-hole tournament.
Eric Moore was the only RSU player to improve between rounds two and three as the junior shaved six strokes off his score recording a 77 on his way to a 241 total. Owen Bates posted a 90 in round three for a 243 total and was tied with Aaron Davis, who closed the event shooting an 83 in the finale.
RSU plays its final tournament of the 2015-16 season April 17-19 at the Heartland Conference Championship held in Horseshoe Bay, Texas at the Apple Rock course.
