Johnston, Payne lead way for OC at Dallas Baptist tournament

IRVING, Texas (April 6, 2015) – Oklahoma Christian golfers Sam Johnston and Trey Payne both were in the top six individually after the opening day of the Dallas Baptist Patriot Classic on Monday at Hackberry Creek Country Club.

OC stood third in the team race with a two-round score of 578. The Eagles trailed Cameron by six shots and Central Missouri by one shot entering Tuesday’s final round on the par-72, 7,013-yard course.

Johnston shot rounds of 70 and 72 and his 142 put him fifth, five shots behind the leader, Bradley Ferrell of Cameron. Payne was another shot back, tied for sixth, after rounds of 71 and 72.

OC freshman Zac Schafer was 11th in the 87-man field at 144 after shooting a 71 and 73. Senior Jared Consoli rebounded from an opening-round 77 to shoot a 72 in the afternoon and was tied for 24th at 149.

Freshman Chase Esparza was tied for 75th at 159 after shooting a 78 and an 81. Another OC freshman, Grady Neal, played as an individual and shot a pair of 79s for a 158 score, tied for 72nd.
