Key pairings for U.S. Senior Open, Phillips, Woodward, Streck on waiting list, spectators allowed in with water, other notes

Ken Martin is the latest new addition to the field at the 2014 U.S. Senior Open Championship. He was added Sunday when an eligible senior player did not win this week’s PGA Tour event.

Martin, a 55-year-old professional from Port St. Lucie, Fla., competed in sectional qualifying on June 17 in Port St. Lucie, Fla. (The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club). Martin, who will play in his first U.S. Senior Open, shot 72 to claim the first alternate position.

Still hoping for a call are Oklahoma pros Tracy Phillips, Jim Woodward and Ron Streck, who were all first or second alternates at their respective qualifying tournaments. Phillips said during the Swing Fit Golf Oklahoma Hour this Saturday that the USGA had informed him his chances were slim as his rank was approximately 24th of 36 possible alternates.

As of now, following are the pairings and starting times for the first two rounds. Notable pairings include that of Oak Tree Gang members Gil Morgan, Willie Wood and Bob Tway paired together at 2:03 p.m. Thursday while the three winners of previous majors at Oak Tree, Scott Verplank (1984 U.S. Amateur), Jeff Sluman (1988 PGA Championship) and Jay Haas (2006 Senior PGA Championship) will go off at 1:52 Thursday on hole No. 1.

Among those striking the first tee shots in the tournament will be two players with Oklahoma ties. Rocky Walcher of Oklahoma City, a former PGA Tour member who got in through qualifying, is in the first group at 7:15 a.m. Thursday along with Bryan Norton of Mission Hills, Kan. Norton was a member of the 1981 Oral Roberts University team that featured Bill Glasson, Joey Rassett and Jim Kane and finished second in the NCAA Championship.

Three possible contenders to watch are paired together at 8:07 a.m. on hole 10. Rocco Mediate, Tom Lehman and Colin Montgomerie could each make waves this week. Mediate was a little known collegian when he knocked off two-time defending U.S. Amateur Champion Jay Sigel in the first round of match play at the 1984 U.S. Amateur Championship at Oak Tree, helping pave the way for Verplank to go on to a victory that helped launch his steller golf career. Montgomerie shed years of frustration on U.S. soil when he won the Senior PGA Championship this spring. And Lehman is a great ballstriker who can take a lot of the trouble at Oak Tree National out of play if he is on this week. He missed all previous events there as he was not on the PGA Tour in 1988 and not a senior in 2006.

Note: Due to the heat and humidity, spectators are allowed to bring one clear bottle of water, up to 16 ounces in size and sealed, through the admission gates.

In addition, spectators may purchase a regular bottle of water for $2.50 at all concession areas, and they will receive a second bottle free of charge.

"Due to the forecast for hot and humid conditions, there is a need to take precautionary measures for hydration and spectator safety," said Senior Director of the U.S. Senior Open Championship Tim Flaherty. "Spectators are of the upmost concern and we thank the club and championship officials for working together to provide this service."
