OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University finished its fall men’s golf season by taking fourth in the 41st U.C. Ferguson Classic at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
Brothers Anthony and James Marchesani tied for eighth individually to pace the Stars. OCU, ranked atop the NAIA Golf World/Nike Golf rankings, shot 290-283-573 on the par-71, 6,576-yard layout.
OCU posted two victories in three fall events. The Stars resume the 2013-14 season in the Claude Jacobs Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 17-18 at Victoria Country Club in Victoria, Texas.
Cody Taylor became the third University of Oklahoma individual to win the U.C. Ferguson Classic, joining Jim Zimmerman in 1972 and Cliff Pierce in 1984. No. 12-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) won the team title.
James Marchesani, a senior from Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, carded a 72-69-139 with nine birdies in the tournament for OCU. James fired in birdies on all four par-5 holes Tuesday. He tied for second in the field in par-5 scoring at 5-under-par.
Anthony Marchesani, a sophomore from Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, provided the Stars with a 68-71-139. Anthony sank nine birdies in the tournament, nailing birdies on two par-5 holes in the final round.
The Stars’ Garrison Mendoza, a freshman from Clinton, Okla., shot 72-72-144, while Matthew Cheung, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, contributed a 78-73-151. Scott Verplank, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., had a 75 on Tuesday.
Issa Abou el Ela, a sophomore from Alexandria, Egypt, and Mark Anderson, a senior from Wichita, Kan., led the Oklahoma City Blue squad. El Ela put together a 72-73-145 plus an eagle, and Anderson added a 73-72-145. Wyatt Robson compiled a 75-75-150, and Thomas Holtzman had an 80-72-152.
Conditions at the start of play Tuesday included 52 degrees, 22 mph winds with 32 mph gusts. Skies were overcast, and the temperature reached 60 degrees.
