Mason leads U.S. Open qualifying at Southern Hills

Tulsa-based professional golfer Greg Mason shot a 1-over par 71 to lead a group of five golfers who qualified for U.S. Open sectionals during a rain-delayed local qualifying tournament at Southern Hills Country Club Monday and Tuesday.

Chris Worrell of Jenks tied Brian Bennett of Springfield for the second lowest round with a 72, but declined to move on. Sam Powell of Tulsa, Blake Trimble of Houston and Michael Elafros of Oklahoma City were the other qualifiers.

The morning wave completed qualifying Monday while the afternoon wave had to return to the course Tuesday to play most of its round. The weather played a part in 24 players either withdrawing or not turning in cards.
