NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – The No. 9 Oklahoma men’s golf team holds a six shot lead over Oklahoma State after day one at the Nike Collegiate Invitational. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the par-71, 7,109-yard Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland, Ore.
The Sooners carded a 270 (-14) during Sunday’s opening round as three OU players finished the day in the top five on the individual leaderboard. As a team, the Sooners carded 23 birdies during their round.
On the team leaderboard, OU leads second-place Oklahoma State by six strokes after the Cowboys posted a first-round 276 (-8) Sunday. Texas and Clemson are tied for third place at 278 (-6) with Wake Forest rounding out the top five after carding a 279 (-5).
Logan McAllister turned in the best round of his collegiate career to earn the individual lead after the first round. The sophomore’s 65 (-6) bested his previous low score of 66, which came last season at the 2018 Carmel Cup. The Oklahoma City native picked up a team-best seven birdies in the first round.
Garett Reband and Thomas Johnson share second place after carding an opening-round 67 (-4) on Sunday. The duo each picked up five birdies on the day.
Sophomore Patrick Welch is tied for 30th place after recording a 71 (E) in the first round. Senior Quade Cummins shares 41st place after logging a 72 (+1) during the first day of action. Cummins tallied three birdies on his scorecard.
Oklahoma State used a strong finish to its day to move up the leaderboard with the starting five combining to tally seven birdies and an eagle against just one bogey over its final three holes.
A pair of Cowboys finished the day inside the top 10 with sophomore Aman Gupta and freshman Brian Stark each posting 3-under 68s to finish tied for eighth place.
Gupta made the turn in 1-under 34 after posting birdies on two of the final four holes on the outward nine. He came home in 2-under 34 after logging birdies on two of his final three holes of the day.
Starting on the back nine, Stark birdied the 11th before carding his lone bogey of the day at the 12th. He posted a birdie at the 18th to turn in 1-under. Stark strung together six pars in a row to start his second nine before adding birdies at the seventh and eighth to get to his 3-under total.
Finishing a shot behind his teammates was senior Ferdinand Müller, who turned in a 2-under 69 to finish tied for 19th place.
Sophomore Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and junior Austin Eckroat wrapped up the day tied for 30th place after signing for even-par 71s.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 9:40 a.m. (PST) and will be grouped with Oklahoma and Texas. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
