Heath Myers of Kingfisher won a playoff with Luke Phillips of Edmond after both finished the regulation 36 holes at even-par 140 Sunday to win the Oklahoma Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore.
Myers was 3-under with two holes to play but made bogeys on holes 17 and 18 to fall into a playoff with Phillips. First-round leader Mike Hughett of Owasso had a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to get in the playoff that narrowly missed.
Phillips made it easy on Myers in the playoff, driving into trouble on the first hole and having his second shot clip a tree and land in a pond.
Myers closed with a 1-under 69 while Phillips posted the tournament’s best round of 3-under 67 as both moved a shot past Hughett.
Hughett (70-71) finished tied for third with JR Hurley of Norman (71-70) and Dillon Jordan of Ardmore (71-70). Kyle Hudelson of Edmond was sixth at 143 (72-71).
Myers, a member of the OGA Board of Directors, said Dornick Hills was in wonderful condition and that he appreciated the OGA moving the event to a weekend and hopes for larger participation in 2019. He and many of the players in the field will compete Monday in a qualifier at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. A full field of 78 is expected to compete for four spots. The U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship is Sept. 22-27 at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club.
