KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kelsey Lumpkin was named the spring’s first MIAA Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced Wednesday morning.
The true freshman from McKinney, Texas, helped No. 16 Northeastern State pick up a fourth-place finish at last week’s star-studded St. Edward’s Invitational. NSU shot 59-over 619 (309-310) in a field that included nine teams ranked in the top 40 in the country. No. 1 Florida Tech and No. 10 Indianapolis were in the field, and the RiverHawks defeated No. 15 St. Mary’s.
Lumpkin landed in solo sixth at 10-over 150 (74-76) to record the second top-10 finish of her young career. The 74 she fired in the first round tied for her lowest individual round of the season, and she was NSU’s low finisher for the first time this year.
The honor is the first of Lumpkin’s career, and she joins junior Baylee Price (Sept. 16) and fellow true freshman Ebba Moberg (Oct. 21) in winning golfer of the week honors from the MIAA this season. Northeastern State is the only MIAA school with multiple women’s golf athletes of the week in 2015-16.
The next event for NSU is the UNK Spring Invitational, which will be contested March 25-26 at Awarii Dunes Golf Club in Axtell, Nebraska.
