NSU men trail Central Missouri in MIAA Championship

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Northeastern State men’s golf team landed in second place after Monday’s first round of the 2014 MIAA Men’s Golf Championship, which is being contested on the par-72, 7,092-yard Alvamar Golf Club championship course.

The RiverHawks carded a 3-over score of 291 to find themselves eight strokes back of No. 9-ranked Central Missouri (283). NSU is also three strokes ahead of Washburn (294) and six clear of Lindenwood (297). Lincoln (300) rounded out the opening-round top 5.

Freshman Marc Johnson carded an even round of 72 to find himself atop the team standings and tied for sixth overall. Junior Josh Strimple, sophomore Brent Williamson and freshman Tate Williamson all fired identical 1-over 73’s to land in the team scoring and tie for 12th, while junior Brad Hager shot 5-over 77 and is tied for 34th.

Central Missouri’s Cy Moritz shot a 4-under 68 to lead the individual standings by three strokes over a group of four.

Northeastern State will begin teeing off in Tuesday’s second round at 11 a.m. The RiverHawks will be in the final trio of teams with Washburn and Central Missouri.
