NSU second, UCO fourth in Fall Preview, Souvannasing ties for medalist

OLATHE, Kan. – The Northeastern State women’s golf team shot finished runner-up at the season-opening NCAA Division II Fall Central Region Preview, which was contested at the par-72 Prairie Highlands Golf Club.

Former Union High School golfer Marla Souvannasing earned co-medalist honors to lead Central Oklahoma to a fourth-place finish.

Souvannasing shot a final-round 73 to finish at even-par 144 as the sophomore star earned her fifth tournament title.  Daniela Martinez came in with a 77, while freshmen Grace Shin (78), J.T. Neuzil (82) and Makena Mucciaccio (83) finished out the scoring.
"Marla had a great tournament and I’m really proud of the way she played," head coach Michael Bond said.  "We came back and played a little better today and it was a good start to the season for a young team."

The RiverHawks carded a final-round score of 14-over-par 302 Tuesday to finish second at 29-over 605 (303-302). Augustana won the team title at 23-over 599 (296-303), while Arkansas Tech finished in third at 41-over 617 (320-297). Central Oklahoma placed fourth at 47-over 623 (313-310) and Henderson State placed fifth at 58-over 634 (318-316).

Augie’s Emily Israelson and Souvannasing tied for individual honors after both shooting identical scores of even-par 144 (71-73).

NSU was the only team to have all five golfers place in the top 20, and the team was led by junior Baylee Price and freshman Halie Wright both posting T-5 efforts. The duo each shot rounds of 74 and 76 to finish at 6-over 150.

Freshman Kelsey Lumpkin landed in solo 10th at 8-over 152 (76-76), while senior Charter Lawson was a stroke back in a tie for 11th at 9-over 153 (79-74). Freshman Ebba Moberg rounded out the RiverHawks lineup with a T-18. She shot 13-over 157 (80-77).

All five members of the team shot in the 70’s in the final round. Only once all of last season did each competitor break 80 in the same round.

The next tournament for the women’s golf team will be the 17th Annual NSU Women’s Golf Classic, which will be contested Sept. 14-15 at Cherokee Springs Golf Club in Tahlequah.
