NSU sets team record in first round of Mustang Invitational

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The No. 17-ranked Northeastern State women’s golf team sits in second place after Friday’s first round of the Mustang Intercollegiate, which is being contested at the par-72, 5,900-yard Palm Valley Golf Club.

The 24-team field is loaded with nationally-ranked clubs, including eight of the top 20-ranked teams in the country.

The RiverHawks carded the lowest score in relation to par in school history after firing an even-par round of 288. They sit three strokes back of clubhouse leader and No. 8-ranked Tarleton State, who shot 3-under 285.

No. 11 Dallas Baptist landed in third at 5-over 293, Colorado State-Pueblo is fourth at 6-over 294 and No. 15 California Baptist rounded out the top 5 at 9-over 297.

Northeastern State also sits well ahead of No. 12 Augustana and No. 16 St. Mary’s. StMU is tied for sixth at 11-over 299, while the Vikings are tied for 12th at 18-over 306.

Senior Charter Lawson birdied her final three holes to shoot a career-low score of 2-under 70. She is tied for fifth and posted her second-career round under par.

True freshman Kelsey Lumpkin shot even-par 72 to land in a tie for 13th, while junior Baylee Price and true freshman Ebba Moberg are both tied for 16th at 1-over 73. True freshman Halie Wright rounded out the team score at 5-over 77. She sits T-49 in a field of 120 competitors.

The RiverHawks will begin teeing off in Saturday’s final round at 10:20 a.m. (CST).
