OCU wins showdown with Dalton State in Innisbrook

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University prevailed by one shot over Dalton State (Ga.) in a showdown of the top two-ranked teams in NAIA men’s golf in the South Carolina Beaufort Innisbrook Invitational on Tuesday at Innisbrook Golf Resort.

The Stars collected their third victory in three tournaments this season. Rupert Kaminski of OCU edged Newport Laparojkit of South Carolina Beaufort for the individual crown.

Oklahoma City posted a 297-297-297–891 on the par-71, 7,015-yard Copperhead Course. The Stars topped six ranked teams in the field including fourth-ranked Johnson & Wales (Fla.), No. 5 Coastal Georgia, ninth-ranked South Carolina Beaufort, 11th-ranked Keiser (Fla.) and 18th-ranked Point (Ga.).

Kaminski, a junior from Johannesburg, South Africa, snagged his ninth career victory to extend his OCU record. Kaminski owns two tournament victories in three starts in 2017-18. Kaminski overcame a three-stroke deficit entering Tuesday’s final round with a 71-73-70–214.

The Stars’ Garrison Mendoza, a senior from Clinton, Okla., tied for ninth place with a 78-72-74–224, while David Meyers, a sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa, contributed a 76-72-77–225, which tied for 11th.

Gaston Romero carded a 75-80-76–231, and Peri’Don Castille had a 75-82-81–238 for Oklahoma City.

OCU continues its season in the Battle on the Bayou on Oct. 9-10 at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La.
