Oklahoma Christian men rally to win NCCAA Central Region in Owasso

OWASSO, Okla. (Sept. 23, 2014) – Oklahoma Christian men’s golf coach David Lynn thought the Eagles’ three veterans – Sam Johnston, Jared Consoli and Trey Payne – pressed a bit on the first day of the inaugural National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region Championship.

On the tournament’s final day Tuesday, they let the game come to them and fueled a comeback that gave OC its first team win in nearly a year. The Eagles – who were in third place, down five shots, entering the final round – shot an 11-under 277 at Owasso Golf and Athletic Club to win the regional title.

OC’s three-round score of 846 edged Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist (Texas) by three shots and Central Baptist (Ark.) by seven shots. DBU shot a 285 on Tuesday, Central Baptist a 286.

The team title was the first for OC since last Sept. 30-Oct. 1, when the Eagles took top honors in the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate at The Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz.

With the regional win, the Eagles will receive an automatic bid to the NCCAA Championship, to be played in Panama City Beach, Fla., in late October. OC finished fourth at the national tournament last year after winning the NCCAA crown in 2012.

"It was nice to see the rally," Lynn said. "We talked last night about … being a little bit more conservative, putting the ball in play and letting the birdies come to you, rather than forcing them. I really felt like they did a good job doing that today.

"This group is close. They’re a lot of fun to be around. I’m really excited. I think this is a good stepping stone for us moving forward, to have come out here and performed when we had to. We had planned on winning this tournament, and we didn’t put ourselves in the position to win after the first day. It’s a lot of fun to step up and do it when you’ve got to do it."

Johnston, a two-time NCAA Division II and NCCAA All-American, fired a 5-under-par 67 on the 7,034-yard course to finish second individually, one shot behind Central Baptist’s Austin Harmon, who had entered the day with a five-shot cushion.

Consoli closed with a 68 and was tied for 11th in the 46-man field at 214. Payne shot a steady 70 – his best round of the tournament – and tied for 17th at 218.

"You ask your kids with experience to step up when the time is right," Lynn said. "They knew it. We were five shots down on a golf course that, to be honest, is not easy to make up five shots, because it’s a pretty easy golf course. They knew they were going to have to shoot low. For Sam and Jared and Trey to shoot the numbers when we had to have it says something. I’m very proud of them for doing that."

Freshman Zac Schaefer, who opened the tournament with a 67, closed with a 72 on Tuesday to give OC four finishers at even par or better. Schaefer tied for eighth at 212. OC’s other freshman, Asher Owen, tied for 32nd at 228 after struggling to a final-round 85, but his second-round 69 on Monday had helped keep the Eagles in the hunt.

"Asher has had four contributing rounds in two weeks and he’s far ahead of what I had planned for him in his golf career, so I’m very pleased with him," Lynn said. "For Zac to shoot 67 in the morning yesterday, and Asher to come back with 69, that carried us yesterday."

A third OC freshman, Chase Esparza, played as an individual and finished 23rd – in the upper half of the field – after shooting a final-round 72 for a three-round total of 221.

The Eagles will return to action Oct. 6-7, when they will play in the Newman Invitational at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wichita, Kan.

OC women finish second to Dallas Baptist

Another solid round on Tuesday wasn’t quite enough for Oklahoma Christian to beat Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist (Texas) at the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region Championship.

OC posted its second straight team score of 296 and finished at 592 for the two-day tournament at Owasso Golf and Athletic Club, 14 shots behind Dallas Baptist, which shot a 284 and earned an automatic berth to the NCCAA Championship next month in Panama City Beach, Fla.

OC likely will earn an at-large bid to the NCCAA Championship, in which the Lady Eagles have finished in the top three each of the past two years.

Junior Audrey Meisch led the Lady Eagles at the regional, firing a 2-under-par 70 on the 6,132-yard course to finish tied for second in the 31-woman field at 1-under 143, three shots behind the medalist, Erin Barrington of Dallas Baptist. Meisch lost a scorecard playoff for second place to DBU’s Kirsten Pike and thus received the third-place individual trophy.

Allison Sell and Anna Arrese Cortadellas each turned in a 75 on Tuesday, with Sell finishing fifth at 148 and Arrese Cortadellas sixth at 149. Catherine Odgers fired her second straight 76 to close at 152, tied for seventh, while India Matthews’ 80 left her at 156, tied for 14th.

OC will return to action Oct. 6-7, playing in the RCB Bank Classic at Lincoln Park Golf Club’s East Course in Oklahoma City.
