NORMAN, Okla. (June 17, 2014) – For the second straight year, Oklahoma Christian golfer Sam Johnston was named Tuesday to the PING Division II All-America list.

Johnston, a sophomore from San Diego, was one of eight players who received second-team recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America, which chooses the Division II All-America squads.

“That’s awesome,” OC coach David Lynn said. “It’s an incredible accomplishment to be recognized as a NCAA All-American. Sam had an outstanding year, winning twice and leading our team to a pair of victories. It’s very satisfying to see all of his hard work pay off with this honor.”

During the 2013-14 campaign, Johnston led the Heartland Conference (and was second in the South Central Region and seventh nationally) in stroke average at 72.15 shots per round.

He won a pair of tournaments, the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate at The Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz., and the Dr. Troy Bledsoe Skyhawk Shootout at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.

Johnston, who earlier was named to the All-South Central Region team, was one of only two Heartland players to be recognized on the PING All-America teams. Dillion Van Essen of St. Edward’s (Texas), the conference’s freshman of the year, received honorable mention on the national list.

Last year, Johnston also was a second-team PING All-America selection and became the first Oklahoma Christian student-athlete ever to earn All-America honors at the Division II level. OC is in the second year of the three-year NCAA Division II membership process.
