OSU first, OU second early in Dale McNamara Fall Preview
The Oklahoma State Cowgirls lead state rival Oklahoma by four strokes at the Dale McNamara Fall Preview after Mondays opening 18 holes. The Cowgirls, coached by former TU golfer Courtney Jones, carded a first round score of 2-under par 278 at the par-70 Tulsa Country Club course.
Oklahoma State’s Julie Yang shot a 3-under par score of 67 to pace the individual field, followed by Stanford’s Lauren Kim with a 2-under 68. Nine golfers are tied for third place with scores of 1-under par 69.
"I think the girls did well. This is exciting. They’ve been working very hard, and have been back in Stillwater since August 19th, so it was fun to see the hard work pay off out here in a tournament. This golf course makes you think and they did a good job of staying patient today, said Jones of her Cowgirl team.
Oklahoma scored a round of 282 and sits one stroke ahead of third-place Arizona and Duke with rounds of 283. Arizona State, coached by Melissa McNamara Luellen, another former TU golfer and daughter of the tournament’s namesake Dale McNamara, is in fifth-place with a score of 284. Rounding out the top-10 schools are sixth-place Stanford (286), Vanderbilt (287), Georgia and No. 1-ranked Southern Cal (288) and North Carolina (289).
A young Tulsa squad, with three newcomers playing their first collegiate round of golf, scored a round of 316 for 15th place. Tulsa is the only team in the field not ranked among the nation’s top-20 teams, as ranked by the Golf World/WGCA Coaches’ poll.
Tulsa senior Kayla Riede had the best round of the day for the Hurricane with an eight-over par 78 for 68th place, while sophomore Antonia Von Wnuck and freshman Valeria Otoya are tied for 69th place after a rounds of 79 on Monday.
"We knew the field was loaded. Any time you get 14 of the top-20 schools in the country here, we knew what it would be like. We were excited to get these teams to Tulsa and at the Tulsa Country Club. The scores were good today. It’s great competition," said Tulsa coach Randy Keck. "Anytime you take three new players and put them in the lineup against this field, you’d hate to use the word scared, but they were nervous and scared. I used it as a motivational tool to show them where they’ll have to be at the end of the spring. It gives them something to work towards and excites them about where they can get to."
Junior college transfer Franziska Voellinger shot a round of 80 for 72nd place for the Hurricane, while sophomore transfer Alex Haun’s 84 put the Tulsa newcomer in 74th place.
Play resumes on Tuesday with the second 18 holes. Players will begin tee times at 8:00 am.
