OSU fourth, TU moves up to sixth in Fayetteville Regional

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team slipped one spot into fourth place at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional on Friday after posting a 304 during its second round at Blessings Golf Club.
 
The Cowboys began the day in third place and a shot out of second before carding their 16-over score at the par-72, 7,251-yard layout. Through 36 holes, OSU stands at 14-over 590 and seven shots behind Texas for third. Arkansas moved into the lead after a 283 gave the host Razorbacks a 573 total. One shot off the lead and alone in second place is Illinois.

Taylor Moore of Edmond helped Arkansas grab the lead with his second-consecutive even-par 72 and is tied for seventh.

Three players shared the individual lead with SMU’s Mario Clemens, Arkansas’ Austin Cook and Stephen F. Austin’s Mitchell McLeroy standing at 4-under 140.

Junior Ian Davis posted the Cowboys’ round of the day, finishing with a 1-under 71. His tally moved him from a tie for 11th into a deadlock for sixth place at143. Davis opened with a birdie and moved back to level par with a bogey two holes later. He strung together five consecutive pars before making the turn at 1-under 36 after posting a birdie at the par-5 ninth.
 
Davis’ inward nine saw him log three birdies and three bogeys in a seven-hole stretch as he eventually wound up at even-par 35 to remain 1-under of the day.
 
Freshman Jordan Niebrugge entered play tied for second after an opening 67, but finished the day tied for 11th at 145 after signing for a 78 during his second round.
 
Junior Kevin Dougherty posted his second consecutive 73 to move into a tie for 17th place at 146, while fellow junior Talor Gooch’s 82 gave him a 156 total and tied him for 53rd.
 
Sophomore Patrick Winther finished alone in 66th at 163 after turning in an 82.
 
The Cowboys will look to secure one of the regional’s five qualifying spots for the NCAA Championship when they begin their final round tomorrow at 7:50 a.m. (CST). OSU will be grouped with Kent State and Tulsa.

The Tulsa men’s golf team moved from ninth to sixth-place after second round action. The Golden Hurricane carded a round of 292, 11 strokes better than Thursday’s opening score of 303, and sits just four strokes behind that all-important fifth-place slot that is currently held by Kent State with a 36-hole total of 591.

Tulsa is tied with SMU for sixth place at 19-over par 595.

Tulsa junior Mark Mumford turned in a score of 1-under par 71 today and has a total score of 1-over par 145 for 11th place. Mumford, starting the day on hole 10, was 2-under par after his first nine holes with birdie putts on holes 10, 11, 16 and 18, but suffered a double bogey on the par-3 15th hole. He had two bogeys on his second nine holes and one birdie.
 
Senior Chris Worrell shot 74 and has a 149 total for 29th place, while Colton Staggs is in 34th place after turning in Tulsa’s best score of the day with a 2under par 70. He had an opening round 81 and sits at 7-over par 151. On Thursday, Staggs birdied his second hole, the par-4 third, then triple bogeyed the par-5 12th. The Tulsa sophomore gathered himself after the triple and proceeded to birdie holes 13, 14, 16 and 18. He then pared his final nine hole.
 
Junior Logan McCracken is in 44th place with a score of 154 after turning in a round of 80 today, while sophomore Matt Mabrey is in 55th place. He carded a round of 77 for a 157 total.
 
The NCAA Championship Finals will be conducted May 28-June 2 at The Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Georgia.
