COLUMBIA, Mo. – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team fired a 272 during its first round at the NCAA Columbia Regional on Thursday to stand in first place at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
The Cowboys’ 16-under total put them nine shots clear of Missouri and 13 ahead of third-place Virginia. OSU had four players break par and finish the day in the top 10 individually en route to building its lead.
"It’s in really good condition and the greens are perfect, so it’s right for scoring. It was nice that we got to go out early and we made some birdies, so overall it was good. Our guys like the golf course, so hopefully we can keep putting up scores like this," OSU head coach Alan Bratton said.
Sophomore Jordan Niebrugge blistered the par-72, 7,141-yard layout with a bogey-free 65 to lead senior teammate Talor Gooch by two strokes. Niebrugge birdied three of his first five holes before adding his fourth birdie of the day at the par-5 ninth to turn at 4-under 32. After opening his back nine with three pars, he reeled off birdies at the 13th, 15th and 17th to move to 7-under par for his round and match his low score of the year.
"I hit a lot of fairways and greens. I think I only missed one green so that’s what you want to do out here. The greens are so good that you can make putts and I made a couple of long ones today," Niebrugge said.
Gooch grabbed sole possession of second place with a 5-under 67. After carding his lone bogey of the day at the third, he birdied the ninth to get back to level par. Gooch moved into red figures with a birdie at the 10th before reeling off four consecutive birdies on Nos. 13 through 16 to come in with a 5-under 31.
Redshirt freshman Wyndham Clark and Ian Davis finished with 70s and in a three-way tie for seventh place. Clark’s round included five birdies and an eagle, while Davis posted three birdies against just one bogey to get to his 2-under total.
Freshman Zachary Olsen’s 77 tied him for 52nd place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 9:10 a.m. and will be grouped with Missouri and Virginia. Live scoring for the event is available at golfstat.com.
