TRINITY, Texas – Oklahoma Stateâ€™s menâ€™s golf team opened play on Friday at the Big 12 Championship with a 36-hole total of 592 to finish the day alone in second place at Whispering Pines Golf Club.
The Cowboysâ€™ 16-over total included rounds of 292 and 300, putting them seven shots off the pace set by Texas at the par-72, 7,473-yard layout. Texas posted a 585 tally over its first two rounds, while Texas Tech carded a 593 score to stand in third place. Oklahoma is fourth at 604.
TCUâ€™s Paul Barjon and Texasâ€™ Beau Hossler were the only two players to finish the day under par, standing at 2-under 142 to share the top spot on the leaderboard.
Stratton Nolen led the way for the Cowboys starting five, posting an even-par 144 to claim sole possession of third place. The sophomore opened with a 71 before posting a 73 to get to his total.
Sophomore Kristoffer Ventura followed an opening 72 with a 75 to finish the day tied for seventh place at 147.
Senior Jordan Niebrugge turned in a pair of 74s to stand at 148 and tied for 10th place.
Junior Wyndham Clark wrapped up his first day tied for 21st place at 153 after signing for rounds of 75 and 78, while sophomore Brendon Jelley posted a 154 total that included rounds of 76 and 78 to come in tied for 25th place.
The Cowboys will begin their third round tomorrow at 8 a.m. (CST) and will be paired with Texas.
No. 20 Oklahoma is in fourth place with an overall 604. The Sooners shot a 307 (+19) in the first round and a 297 (+9) in the second, advancing them three places in the team rankings.
"We struggled early this morning, which has put ourselves in a hole moving forward, but we got better this afternoon," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We still have a lot of golf left down here, and one great round can do wonders at this championship."
Sophomore Grant Hirschman paces the Sooners with a two-round 149, holding a tie for 12th. He pocketed five birdies on Friday, firing a 73 in the first round and a 76 in the second.
Freshman Brad Dalke is in a tie for 15th with a 151. After carding a 77 in the first round, Dalke posted a 74 in the second. One stroke behind Dalke and in a tie for 19th is junior Max McGreevy, who recorded a 78-74.
Senior Luke Kwon holds a share of 24th after tallying a 154 (79-75). Blaine Hale shot 82-74 and is tied for 34th.
The third round of the Big 12 Championship is scheduled for Saturday morning, and the Soonersâ€™ tee times will begin at 8:45 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
