LAS VEGAS — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team carded a 6-over 294 on Tuesday during the second round of action at the Southern Highlands Collegiate to slide into a tie for eighth place with the Oklahoma Sooners, who advanced four spots, at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
The Cowboys began the day in a four-way tie for second place at the par-72, 7,374-yard layout before falling int a tie with Oklahoma at 586. Southern California fired an 8-under 280 to grab a seven-shot lead over the field, finishing the day at 572.
USC’s Sean Crocker and Arizona State’s Jon Rahm shared the individual lead at 6-under 138 after signing for rounds of 68 and 69, respectively.
A pair of Cowboys finished the day tied for 21st place with senior Jordan Niebrugge and junior Wyndham Clark coming in tied at 146. Niebrugge posted his second consecutive 73, while Clark followed an opening 74 to get to his 36-hole total.
Sophomore Brendon Jelley posted the squad’s low round of the day with a 72 to stand in a tie for 30th place at 147.
Junior Zachary Olsen carded a 76 to finish the day tied for 33rd place at 148, while freshman Zach Bauchou posted a 75 to stand at 151 and tied for 48th place.
The Cowboys will begin their final round tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. (PST) and will be grouped with Oklahoma and California.
No. 17 Oklahoma moved up four spots. Beginning the round in 12th place, the Sooners fired a 283 (-5) Tuesday, marking the second-best round of the day behind only tournament-leader USC’s 208 (-8).
"Anytime you get under par at Southern Highlands is a successful day, and we will take it," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said.
Junior Max McGreevy leads the Sooners, holding sixth place with a two-round 141 (-3). After shooting bogeys on his first two holes of the round, McGreevy recovered by carding at or below par on the remaining 16 holes, pocketing five birdies and an eagle. His second-round 67 (-5) is the lowest score among all competitors at the tournament so far and marks his 20th career round in the 60s.
Also in the top 20 for OU is Brad Dalke, who shares 12th place with an overall even-par 144. The freshman put together an impressive round, collecting five birdies en route to a 68 (-4), advancing him 34 spots in the individual rankings.
"We had two guys, Max and Brad, that played great rounds for us today," Hybl said. "They put us in a great spot for tomorrow, and now we need all five guys to kick it into high gear for the final round."
Senior Luke Kwon is in a tie for 30th with an overall 147 (+3). He recorded a 73 (+1) for the round.
At 156 (+12), sophomore Grant Hirschman and Blaine Hale have a share of 65th place. After struggling at the onset of the round, Hirschman turned around to shoot three birdies on the last six holes, finishing with a 75 (+3). Hale showed improvement Tuesday, firing a 77 (+5).
The final round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate is scheduled to begin Wednesday morning, and the Sooners will tee off at 10 CT from hole No. 1. Live stats will be available on GolfStat.com
