Fayetteville, Arkansas — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team was one of three squads to break par during the first round of action on Thursday at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional. The Cowboys posted a 2-under 286 to stand alone in third place at Blessings Golf Club.
OSU’s score put them a stroke behind Texas for second. Illinois came away as the first-round leader with a 6-under 282 at the par-72, 7,251-yard layout.
Illinois also produced the top individual score with Charlie Danielson firing a 65 to lead by two over the field.
Cowboy freshman Jordan Niebrugge was joined at the No. 2 spot on the individual leaderboard by Kent State’s Corey Conners. The duo fired 5-under 67s. Niebrugge opened with five consecutive pars before carding birdies on three of the final four holes on his outward nine to turn at 3-under 34. After moving to 4-under for the day with a birdie at the par-3 10th, Niebrugge added two more birdies at the 16th and 17th before carding his lone bogey of the day at the 18th.
Junior Ian Davis posted a 72 to finish the day in 11th place, while classmate Kevin Dougherty came in a stroke back with a 73 and tied for 20th.
Junior Talor Gooch came in tied for 25th place with an opening 74.
Sophomore Patrick Winther rounded out the starting five with an 81, tying him for 65th place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 9:10 a.m. (CST) and will be grouped with Illinois and Texas.
The Tulsa men’s golf team is in a ninth place tie. The Golden Hurricane shot a score of 303 to share ninth-place with UMKC and Liberty.
Juniors Logan McCracken and Mark Mumford turned in the best rounds for Tulsa on Thursday with 2-over par scores of 74. The duo is in 25th place, while senior Chris Worrell is one stroke back with a first round total of 75 for 39th place. Sophomores Matt Mabrey and Colton Staggs shot rounds of 80 and 81, respectively.
At the completion of the three-day, 54-hole regional tournament, the low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Finals. The finals will be conducted May 28-June 2 at The Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Georgia.
