JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Oklahoma State’s Zachary Olsen won a pair of matches on Thursday to move into the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Olsen, a rising sophomore for the Cowboys, knocked off Bo Andrews by a 4-and-3 count during the morning session before defeating 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur Champion Will Zalatoris, 5 and 3, in the Round of 16.
Against Andrews, Olsen birdied the first to take a lead he would not surrender. After taking a 2-up lead with a win at the second, he won the fourth and fifth to build a commanding 4-up advantage.
Andrews won the eighth, but Olsen answered by taking the ninth to maintain his 4-up lead heading to the inward nine.
Andrews took the 11th and 13th, while Olsen captured the 12th before closing out the match with a birdie at the 15th.
Like his morning match, Olsen birdied the opening hole against Zalatoris and led for the duration of the match. He added wins at the third and fourth for a 3-up margin before Zalatoris took Nos. 5 and 6 to move back within one.
Olsen turned with a 2-up lead after winning the ninth with a birdie and took command of the match with wins at the 11th and 13th. He closed out the match with a birdie at the par-3 15th hole.
“I think I drove it really well. I was able to get the tee after the first hole, and then I think I hit a lot of fairways,” Olsen said. “When I was hitting them a lot in the fairway, I think it was tough for Will to get momentum because I was always in a good position.”
Olsen will take on Corey Conners tomorrow at 11:40 a.m. (EST) with a semifinal berth on the line.
