The No. 22 University of Oklahoma men’s golf team claimed first place at the Gopher Invitational with a three-round 854 (+2), while junior Max McGreevy took the individual title. The tournament was played at the par-71, 7,152-yard Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.
This team win is the 11th under seventh-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl and the first of the season.
After ending the second round with the lead, the Sooners scored a 282 (-2) in the final round, the best single-round score for the tournament among all 15 squads.
"What a great team win for us, and I am proud of the way we went out and took care of business," Hybl said. "It is hard to play with the lead, and our guys did a great job leading today. This is a great win for us against a really competitive field."
No. 19 California finished as the runner-up, 21 strokes behind the Sooners. Baylor and Kent State each earned a share of third with an overall 877 (+25), and Charlotte took fifth at 33 over par.
McGreevy finished with a three-round score of 206 (-7), his lowest career 54-hole score, en route to his first career tournament win. McGreevy carded a 66 (-5) on the day, pocketing five birdies and shooting a bogey-free round. This score marks his career-low single-round score and his 16th career round in the 60s.
Senior Luke Kwon claimed second place with a 209 (-4), recording his first career top-five finish. Kwon’s 54-hole score also marks his career best. Kwon finished the final round with a 70 (-1), shooting two birdies.
"This was a huge day for Max as he got his first college win, and he deserves this," Hybl said. "Luke played phenomenal as well, and some of his best golf is still in front of him."
With a three-round 218 (+5), freshman Brad Dalke earned a share of sixth place, collecting his first career top-10 finish. Dalke shot a 75 (+4) on the day, tallying four birdies.
Sophomore Grant Hirschman shot his best round of the tournament Monday with a 72 (+1), moving into a tie for 35th place. Senior Beau Titsworth carded a 74 (+3) in the final round and finished the tournament with a share for 39th place.
