OU, OSU in hunt early in NCAA Championship

The 25th-ranked University of Oklahoma men’s golf team sits in sixth place and Oklahoma State is seventh after one round at the 30-team NCAA Championships, which is being played at the 7,320-yard, par-70 Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga.

The Sooners, who are competing as the No. 23 seed in the tournament, recorded a 2-under first-round 278, the second lowest round posted by the team this season, and are eight strokes behind leader Arizona State.

"I think one of the biggest goals coming into the national championship, just like last year, was to not shoot ourselves in the foot in the first round," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "Abraham Ancer and Charlie Saxon played well, but I don’t think we played great as a team. I think as a team we had a chance to really take it deep today, and we didn’t, so that’s a little disappointing. Overall, we still shot 2-under, and being in the hunt is really all you can ask for following one round."

Leading the Sooners is senior Ancer, who fired a season-low 5-under-par 65, good for second place. Ancer, who was named to the Division I PING All-Region Central team on Tuesday, carded six birdies in the first round and is four strokes off the lead.

"I just played really consistent, safe, but still aggressive golf and hit a lot of greens," Ancer said. "I think I only missed one green all day. I was able to make some putts here and there. Overall, I really hit it well off the tee and in the fairways today."

Sophomore Saxon shot two birdies and just one bogey en route to a 69 (-1) on Tuesday. Saxon is tied for 20th place.

With scores of 72 (+2), junior Michael Schoolcraft and freshman Beau Titsworth share 66th place. Senior Will Kropp posted a 5-over 75 in the first 18 holes of play.

Oklahoma State shot 279 to stand in a tie for seventh place.  The Cowboys finished the day knotted with Texas at 1-under par.  ASU’s Jon Rahm blistered the par-70, 7,319-yard layout with a 9-under 61 to lead the individual race by four shots as well.

Four players finished the day tied for fourth place after carding 67s. Among the group at 3-under par were OSU juniors Talor Gooch and Ian Davis.

"Anytime you can shoot under par on this course it is a good score. It is a tough course, so we just wanted to get off to a good start and hopefully we can keep it going," Gooch said.

Gooch got out of the gate quickly with birdies on three of his first five holes before turning at 2-under 33. He went eagle-birdie on Nos. 12 and 13 to move to 5-under for the day before eventually finishing at 3-under for his round.

Davis carded birdies at the fifth and sixth before turning in 34. He navigated his inward nine without a bogey and used birdies at the 10th and 18th to post a 2-under 33 to get to his total.

Freshman Jordan Niebrugge signed for a 71 to come in tied for 49th, while junior Kevin Dougherty wrapped up the day tied for 113th with a 74.

Sophomore Patrick Winther posted a 78 to finish tied for 148th place.

The Cowboys will begin their second round at 12:20 (EST) tomorrow and will be grouped with LSU and Auburn.

Gooch wore a blue ribbon in honor of those affected by the tornadoes in Moore last week.

"What happened last week has definitely been on our minds. I am from right around there (Moore, Okla.). The tornado picked up about two miles away from my house.  My family was in a shelter when it came through. We have been through tornadoes and it is definitely a sad event anytime they happen."

"I can’t necessarily donate a lot of money, but I just want to try and help out in any way that I can. If we can play some good golf and have some people back at home see that, hopefully it can do some good. I think it’s awesome that we can play for them and hopefully represent them well."
