EDMOND (June 13) – Pat Bates has stepped down after five years as head coach of Central Oklahoma’s highly-successful men’s golf program, it was announced Monday.

A three-time Division I All-American at Florida who spent four years on the PGA Tour, Bates is leaving the program to pursue other business interests.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to coach a bunch of great young men at UCO,” Bates said.  “We won a lot of tournaments, including a couple of conference titles  We had a lofty goal of winning a national championship and got there five year,  but just never got over the hump.

“Our guys played a lot of great golf during my time and I think we represented the university well. I enjoyed my years there, but it was time for me and my family to move on to the next challenge.”

Bates guided the Bronchos to five consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II national tournament and UCO captured 20 tournament titles during his tenure, including a pair of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championships.  He was named MIAA Coach of Year twice.

Bates coached one national champion (Josh Creel) and six All-Americans while with the Bronchos.  UCO finished in the top-five in nine of 13 events and won the MIAA crown this past season before placing ninth in the national tourney.

It was the first coaching stint for Bates, who followed his college career at Florida with a 17-year professional career.  He played in the European, Canadian and South African tours from 1992-94, spent several years on the Nationwide Tour – winning five tournaments – and played on the PGA Tour in 1995 and again from 2002-04.

Pat is married to Kristine and they have three children (John, Kendall and Cooper).
