Powerhouse Oklahoma City begins season atop NAIA men’s poll

NEW YORK – Back-to-back NAIA champion Oklahoma City University held the top spot in the Golf Word/Nike Golf NAIA men’s golf preseason coaches’ poll Wednesday.

The Stars, winners of three of the last four NAIA titles, received all 10 first-place votes to take the No. 1 spot. Grandview (Iowa) is second in the poll followed by fellow Sooner Athletic Conference member Texas Wesleyan, Cal State San Marcos and Johnson and Wales (Fla.).

OCU won the 2013 NAIA title by 28 strokes. Four Stars finished in the top-10 including individual NAIA champion Sondre Ronold who fired 69-69-74-71—283. Anthony Marchesani, James Marchesani, Michael Palmer and Ronold all landed on the all-tournament team for their efforts.

Anthony and James Marchesani return to lead the Stars in the 2013-14 season. The duo from Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, were both named NAIA all-Americans a season ago with James landing on the first team and Anthony earning second-team honors.

OCU has won NAIA men’s golf titles in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

The Stars begin the 2013-14 season in The Mid-South on Sept. 9-10 at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.
