Rogers State men, women prevail

SHERWOOD, Ark. – Entering Tuesday’s second and final round of the University of Arkansas-Monticello Fall Classic at The Greens at North Hills the Rogers State men’s golf team sat one stroke behind Missouri Southern State for first.

The Hillcats shot the second best team score Tuesday and improved upon its opening round score by five strokes to claim the team tournament title by two-strokes with a 615 tournament card. Ouachita Baptist finished second while Missouri Southern State finished third on the 6,855 yard, par 71 course.

Hagen Barmasse led the Hillcats as the sophomore finished second firing rounds of 75-73 for a 148 two-round total. "I’m very pleased with Hagen’s performance," said head coach Lynn Blevins. "This was a good challenging course and Hagen was up for the challenge."

Freshman Ryan Roberts carded an opening round 79 but improved by four strokes Tuesday with a 75 and 154 tournament card. The 154 by Roberts earned the Edmond, Okla. native a spot tied for eighth.

Fellow freshman Austin Wride saw a four stroke improvement on his tournament card from Monday’s opening round to the second round Tuesday as he penciled 80-76–156. Wride finished tied for 12th. Henning Hoening was consistent over the two day tournament with a pair of 81 rounds for 162 and a tie of 22nd place. Transfer Tanner Alder rounded out the Cats five with a tie of 29th shooting a 164.

OBU’s Drew Greenwood earned the individual title after firing 73 (+2) in the first round but followed with the lone subpar score with a 70 (-1) Tuesday for a 143 tournament total.
Rogers State will close out the fall schedule with a trip to Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Garland, Texas for the Northwood Fall Shootout taking place October 28-29.

RSU women roll to big win

SHERWOOD, Ark. – The Rogers State women’s golf team led the University of Arkansas Monticello Fall Classic from start to finish claiming a 25 stroke victory over second place William Carey Tuesday at The Greens at North Hills.

RSU built a 20 stroke lead over then second place Harding University following Monday’s first round of action as the Hillcats fired a 338 team score. A 348 by the Cats in Tuesday’s final round action resulted in a 682 total and the team title on the par 72, 6,150 yard course.

Waterford, Ireland native Michelle Tierney led the Hillcats with a second place finish. The freshman penciled rounds of 85-83 for a 168 tournament card. “The Greens is a good, hard course and I was very pleased with how Michelle played,” said RSU head coach Lynn Blevins.

Three Hillcats, including Tierney, finished among the top three tournament scores as Whitney Hocutt and Raquel Trevino tied for third. Hocutt fired an 81 for the best score among a Hillcat golfer in the two-day tournament. The Claremore, Okla. native followed with an 88 for a 169 total. Trevino shot 87 in Monday’s first round but improved by five strokes Tuesday for a 169 tournament card.

Kina Boone finished with 85-91—176 for a ninth place finish giving RSU four golfers among the tournament Top 10. RSU’s Kelsey Stuever shot a two-round total of 182 for a 16th place finish.

Williams Carey University’s Sarah Hicks posted rounds of 82 (+10) and 83 for a 165 tournament total and the individual crown.

Rogers State will finish out the 2013 fall slate with a trip to Laguna Vista, Texas for the UT Brownsville Fall Shootout at South Padre Island Golf Club.
