Dillon Rust of Edmond was the only one of 83 players to tee off in the U.S. Open local qualifier at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow Tuesday to finish under par, shooting a 4-under 67 and earning one of five spots to advance to sectional qualifying.

Rust, who has been playing mostly on the Mackenzie Tour and APT Tour since completing an outstanding college career at the University of Central Oklahoma in 2013, made six birdies against two bogeys in earning his second berth in sectional qualifying. He hopes to make it through to the U.S. Open for the first time. The Open is scheduled June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, N.Y.

“I don’t want to say I scraped it around, I played well,” said Rust, who had six birdies and two bogeys. “This is a touch course.  I managed to keep it out of trouble.”

Also qualifying with rounds of even-par 71 were Brendon Jelley of Tulsa, Eli Armstrong of Edmond and Cedar Ridge member Rob Laird, a former University of Tulsa golfer.

Greg Mason of Jenks birdied the first hole in a playoff to earn the final spot after a round of 72. Former TU golfers Logan McCracken of Oklahoma City and Chris Worrell of Houston are the first and second alternates, respectively.

Jelley, a senior on the top-ranked Oklahoma State team, is finishing up a bittersweet ending to his career as a Cowboy. For the second time in the last three weeks, he was experiencing individual success while his OSU teammates were elsewhere. During the Big 12 Championship at Southern Hills, Jelley competed in a qualifier for the 2018 Mackenzie Tour and secured his playing privileges for this summer tour. On Tuesday, he was advancing toward a spot in the Open while the Cowboys were leading the NCAA Columbus Regional.

Jelley had a back injury in January which limited his play for two months and limited his chances of starting this spring as the Cowboys went on a seven tournament winning streak. He thinks the Cowboys not starting in Columbus – which includes Stratton Nolen, Nick Heinen, Sam Stevens and Hayden Wood – would be a legitimate national championship contender.

To his credit, Jelley expressed no bitterness and said he would be there to support his teammates when the national championship is held in two weeks at Karsten Creek. He also said if he had to choose now between going to OSU or someplace he would have been guaranteed more playing time, he would again choose to be a Cowboy.

“I’ve learned so much and my game has gotten so much better,” he said. “I definitely feel like it has prepared me very well for my professional career.”

Jelley had four birdies to overcome a stretch of four holes in which he made a double bogy and two bogeys.

“Except for that stretch, I putted about as well as I can,” he said. “I played solid golf.”
