Son reaches brink of third consecutive WOGA championship

Yujeong Son of Norman moved a step closer to her third consecutive WOGA State Amateur Championship with a 3 and 2 victory over low qualifier Anna Mikish in the semifinals Thursday.

Son will face Nadia Majidizadeh of Tulsa in the finals Friday. Majidizadeh, a University of Tulsa golfer, edged Baylee Price of Northeastern State University 1 up in the other semifinal.

Mikish, of Choctaw, was one of eight golfers in the top two flights who plays for Oklahoma City University and her caddy for the match was head coach Marty McCauley. Mikish is one of the longer hitters in the area and consistently bombed her drives well past Son, but her putting wasn’t as sharp.

Down three holes after nine, she had chances to cut into the lead, but three-putted from 15 feet to lose one hole and watched as a fast-moving pitch by Son hit the flagstick and stopped. On the par-5 15th and 16th holes, she had makeable putts for eagle on both but neither dropped and both players birdied both holes from short range.

Majidizadeh, who began her golfing career as a student at The First Tee of Tulsa, took the lead for good when Price’s pitch shot on the 15th hole sailed over the green into tall grass. Both players birdied 16 and made par on the par-3 17th. With Price one down on 18, she left her approach shot short and on the side of a steep hill. The next went long and she would up with a double bogey, same as Majidizadeh who had trouble escaping from a greenside bunker.

Son, who last week made it to the semifinal round of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship and has never lost a match in this event, knocked Majidizadeh out of the 2015 championship. She defeated Price in the 2014 championship match.

"I know it’s going to be a big challenge, she’s a great player" Majidizadeh said. "I’ve got to play my best and trust my swing and believe in myself. If I do those things, I can win"
