Sooners build lead in Liberty Spring Invitational

Through 36 holes of play, the No. 10 Oklahoma men’s golf team leads the inaugural Liberty Spring Invitational in Amherst, Va., with a 14-under-par 562. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the 7,059-yard, par-72 Poplar Grove Golf Course.

For the first round, the Sooners tallied a 3-under-par 285 against the 18-team field. They closed the day with a 279 (-9), their second highest score of the season.

No. 19 North Carolina is in second place at 9 under par, while Lipscomb University holds third with a 574 (-2). Host Liberty is in fourth with a 1-under 575, and Northern Illinois closes out the top five at 1 over.

Individually, all five Sooners sit within the top 20 of 94 competitors, paced by Charlie Saxon. Saxon’s two-round 140 (-4) has him in a tie for third place, three strokes off the lead. The senior posted marks of 70 (-2) in both rounds and recorded 11 total birdies on Friday, including six in a seven-hole stretch in the second round.

With scores of 142 (-2), senior Michael Gellerman and freshman Grant Hirschman share eighth place. Gellerman posted a 75 (+3) and a season-low 67 (-5) in the first and second rounds, respectively, while Hirschman shot an even-par 72 and a 2-under 70. Gellerman sat in a tie for 46th place after the first 18 holes but climbed to the leaderboard behind seven second-round birdies.

Junior Beau Titsworth and sophomore Max McGreevy are tied for 16th place with even-par 144s.  McGreevy opened with a 3-under-par 69 before adding a 75 (+3) in the afternoon. For both rounds, Titsworth shot even-par 72s.

Sixth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said his squad played well overall on Friday, and he hopes to see a similar final-round performance.
"The guys played well for a stretch this afternoon that gave us the lead, and we need some more of that tomorrow," Hybl said. "They love the course, and I like where we are at right now."
The final round of the Liberty Spring Invitational is slated for Saturday. The Sooners, who are looking for their second straight tournament win, will be paired with North Carolina and Lipscomb and tee off from hole No. 1 beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT. Live results will be available on Golfstat.com.
