Sooners climb into second, OSU drops to third in Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

After firing a season-low 277 (-11) in Wednesday’s third round, the No. 23 Oklahoma men’s golf team claimed a runner-up showing at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas, Nev. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was played at the 7,510-yard, par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club. Second-round leader Oklahoma State slipped to a tie for third as No. 3 Texas finished 26-under par to win.

The Sooners posted a three-round 848 (-16) against arguably the best field in collegiate golf, in which all 15 teams were ranked within the top 50 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll, including 10 of the top 25 squads.

"The guys played one of the best team rounds we have ever had," sixth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "It was a fun day and I am so proud of our grittiness and determination this week to get the job done. Texas played great all week and they were tough to catch, but we played strong today and had a fun time doing it."

The Big 12 was well represented at the top of the leaderboard as No. 3 Texas won the event with an 838 (-26), while No. 22 Oklahoma State tied for third with No. 15 Arizona State at 9 under par. No. 12 UCLA rounded out the top five with a 7-under-par 857. Robby Shelton of Alabama won as an individual with a 201 (-15).

Three Sooners finished within the top 20 in freshman Grant Hirschman and seniors Charlie Saxon and Michael Gellerman.

With scores of 211 (-5), Hirschman and Saxon tied for seventh place out of 81 competitors. In the final round, Hirschman tallied a career-low 67 (-5), while Saxon added an even-par 72. Hirschman played five under-par holes on the day, pocketing four birdies and an eagle on the par-4 hole No. 5.

Gellerman shot a 3-under-par 69 for the final 18 holes, bringing his three-round total to 214 (-2), to finish in a tie for 18th place. Gellerman recorded six birdies, including five in a six-hole stretch from holes No. 3 to 8.

Junior Luke Kwon shot a career-low-matching 69 (-3) for the final round and a 215 (-1) for the tournament to tie for 23rd place. Kwon tallied six birdies on the day.

After recording a 2-over-par 73 on Wednesday, sophomore Max McGreevy took a share of 39th place with a 218 (+2).

The Sooners will return to the course on March 21 and 22 (Saturday and Sunday) for the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga.

Oklahoma State carded a 297 during its final round. The Cowboys entered the day atop the leaderboard before their 9-over closing round dropped them into a tie with Arizona State at 9-under 855.

OSU was led by freshman Kristoffer Ventura, who tied for 11th place at 213 after signing for a 74 during his final round.

Sophomore Wyndham Clark tied for 23rd place at 215 after closing with a 78.

Sophomore Zachary Olsen posted the squad’s low round of the day, finishing with a 70 to tie for 30th place at 216.

Redshirt freshman Brendon Jelley tied for 43rd place at 219 after closing with a 78, while junior Jordan Niebrugge’s 75 tied him for 48th place at 220.

The Cowboys will resume their spring slate on March 23 when they begin play at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in West Palm Beach, Fla.Team Standings
