Sooners climb into share of third at Erin Hills

Behind a 6-under par 282 in Tuesday’s final round, the ninth-ranked University of Oklahoma men’s golf team claimed a share of third place at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, its third top-three showing in as many tournaments. The 14-team event was played at the 7,234-yard, par-72 Erin Hills Golf Course located in Erin, Wis.

The Sooners posted a three-round 863 (-1) to tie with 37th-ranked SMU. OU finished 12 strokes behind tournament winner and No. 13-ranked Stanford and four strokes behind second-place UCLA. Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers claimed the individual title with a 209 (-7).

“I thought our guys played very solid all week,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Overall, it was a good week for our guys, and it will be nice to get back to work before our last fall event in Dallas.”

Leading the Sooners was Michael Gellerman, who finished in a tie for sixth place with a 214 (-2), his best showing of the season. The junior shot a 2-under 70 in the final round after recording even par rounds the first two days. Gellerman pocketed four birdies Tuesday and 10 total for the tournament.

“Gellerman played one of his best tournaments in a long time, so that was great to see,” Hybl said.

Junior Charlie Saxon carded a season-low 68 (-4) Tuesday, bringing his three-round total to 217 (+1). Saxon pocketed five birdies in the final 18 holes and eagled the par-5 14th hole. He tied for 13th place.

With scores of 218 (+2), sophomore Beau Titsworth and senior Michael Schoolcraft tied for 19th place. Both Sooners recorded a 72 (E) in the final round, and Schoolcraft shot four birdies for the day, including on holes No. 13, 14 and 15.

Freshman Max McGreevy finished the event in 64th place with a three-round total of 233 (+17) after shooting a 6-over 80 Tuesday.

Competing as an individual in his first collegiate event, freshman Emilio Maurer placed 63rd with a 16-over 232. Maurer carded an 80 (+8) in the final round.

The Sooners will return to action Oct. 28 and 29 (Monday and Tuesday) at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas.
